DIY Camping Garden Flag - Burton Avenue (2024)

Last week, we headed up to the lake for a week of camping, swimming, and fun. Before we left, I made a few camping projects to add a little personality to our campsite. I’ll be sharing these projects over the next few days. Today, I’m showing how to make this camping garden flag. It’s a really easy project to make with your Silhouette or Cricut. I think it turned out super cute! Read on for all the details.

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE FREE SVG FILE

The first thing you’ll need to do is get the free SVG file you’ll use for this project. I keep all the SVG files I use for the projects I make in my SVG Library. These SVG files work with Cricut and Silhouette machines, as well as many others. This library is open to everyone and is free! You can access the library here.

STEP 2: CUT YOUR FABRIC TO SIZE

Cut your fabric to the size you want your flag. I cut mine to 13.5″ x 22″. If you’re using burlap, you cut pull some of the strands out of the sides and bottom to create a frayed edge.

STEP 2: CREATE A POCKET FOR HANGING

Measure your stake to determine how big the pocket needs to be. Fold the burlap to create the pocket and iron to create a crease in the burlap. You can also iron the rest of the burlap so it’s nice and flat.

STEP 3: CUT AND WEED VINYL STENCIL

Open the design in your software program. I sized my design to about 11″ x 16.5″. Then, I added a rectangle around the design to create a stencil.

I like to use Oracal 631 for when I’m stenciling fabric. The transfer tape doesn’t stick quite as well to the matte finish, which in turn, makes it a little easier to get the transfer tape off once the vinyl is on the fabric.

When everything is sized correctly, you can cut the stencil with your Cricut or Silhouette. Once it has finished cutting, weed away the excess vinyl.

STEP 3: APPLY TRANSFER TAPE

Cut a piece of transfer tape a little larger than the design. Before you put the vinyl on the tape, rub a t-shirt or towel over it. This will remove some of the tackiness, which will make transferring the vinyl to the burlap a little easier. Place the vinyl on the transfer tape. Use an application tool to rub over the design. Then, trim off the excess transfer tape.

STEP 4: REMOVE VINYL BACKING

Flip the vinyl over and carefully remove the vinyl backing. Because we removed some of the tackiness of the transfer tape, it might take a little extra work to get the backing off.

STEP 5: CENTER DESIGN ON BURLAP

Place the vinyl on the burlap and use a ruler to center the design. You’ll want to center the design between the bottom of the burlap and the crease mark you made for the pocket.

STEP 6: REMOVE TRANSFER TAPE

Carefully pull off the transfer tape. It might be a little tricky to get the vinyl to stick to the burlap, just go slow and use your fingers to help the vinyl to stay on the burlap.

STEP 7: FILL IN THE STENCIL

Put a piece of cardboard under the burlap to catch any paint that might go through the fabric Then, start filling in the design with paint.

I just used acrylic paints in a variety of colors. Use an up and down motion to apply the paint. Try not to brush back and forth. This will help minimize bleeding.

STEP 8: REMOVE VINYL STENCIL

Once everything is dry, carefully pull off the stencil. You can use a craft knife or weeding tool to pull out the centers of the letters.

Look at those nice clean lines!

STEP 9: FINISH POCKET

Now, you can finish the pocket. I just used hot glue to hold it in place, but you can also sew it if you prefer.

Now you’ve got a super cute camping garden flag you’ve made with your Silhouette or Cricut!
